Weathering Washes
|
AIM Products offers several colored liquids, some with a solid pigment, some with no pigment. All can be applied with a brush and a spray bottle such as a Windex bottle. They come as various colors of rust, grimey, oily dirt, and a grey wash that when dry gives that old dirty aged look. They enhance the appearnce of rolling stock, buildings, details, and anything else on a model railroad that needs a bit of weathering.

Rusts are best applied to something such as a boxcar that is held upsidedown. This lets the rust solution run up into the roofline, door guides, etc. As the alcohol slowly evaporates turn the car right side up so the remaining rust runs down the side of the car to the bottom edge. Using a small brush, make sure the rust gets into the spaces between ladder rungs, ribs on cardoors, roof walks, and roofs. Also place a drop of rust on the wheels of the cars and maybe follow up with a drop of a darker rust for highlight after the first rust is dry. Same applies for the side of the car. Different colors of rust, dirt, grime all make for a car that is interesting in appearance. Not all cars are all rust and dirt so vary the amounts and intensities of the colors from car to car.
Instant age applied to surfaces that simulate wood will help that "wood" surface look old and gray and somewhat sun bleached.
The thing is to experiment until you get a look you like... When you get a car the way you like it it should be sealed with dullcote spray to keep the pigments from rubbing off when handling the car.
We hope you have fun with these Products!
